Marie Gallery is pleased to present "Margins of Firing," an exhibition featuring works by Yoshiro Takada, Kazumi Ito, and Shoichi Seino.

This exhibition focuses on the transformations that occur in artworks through the process of firing—applying heat—and highlights the “margins” or spaces that emerge along the way. The different interpretations and expressions of firing by the three artists create a rich and engaging dialogue.

Kazumi Ito continues to create works inspired by the question: “How do people’s memories and thoughts appear as time flows ceaselessly?” As in her “Gaps in Time and Space” series, she values the unique textures of Nihonga (Japanese painting) while also incorporating new materials and forms, seeking ways to visualize invisible spaces. She evokes fragments of flowing time and memory as subtle, lingering impressions.

Yoshiro Takada pursues the presence of “margins” and inner spaces in his sculptures by using natural materials such as clay, wood, and Japanese paper, and by connecting divided ceramic pieces with metal to emphasize the changes and shrinkage brought about by firing. In his latest works, he incorporates reclaimed wood from traditional Japanese houses, offering new sculptural expressions that layer memories and materials.

Shoichi Seino creates works by firing materials such as clay, stone, graphite, and aluminum, exploring the reactions between fire and matter. Through firing, these materials change their shape and state—sometimes seeming to disappear—yet they reappear in a new form. Seino pursues the natural qualities of each material and the transformations brought about by fire, reflecting cycles of matter, the passage of time, and traces of memory in his work.

Although all three artists engage in the act of firing, this exhibition brings together their individual thoughts and expressions in a unique intersection. We invite you to focus on the “margins” created by the interplay of fire, materials, and each artist’s creative vision.
