From July 18, 2025, Decameron, an art space in Kabukicho, Shinjuku, will present Marko Kolomytskyi’s solo exhibition ‘Из Донбасса в Космос (From Donbas to the Cosmos)’.

Kolomytskyi is an artist and writer from Donbas, Ukraine. Leaving Ukraine at the age of 17, he has since lived and worked in South Korea, China, Japan, Canada, and France. He is currently enrolled in the DNSEP (Diplôme National Supérieur d’Expression Plastique) program at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris.

His practice spans installation, sound, printmaking, performance, and writing, exploring the relationship between language, political memory, and metaphysical communication through a variety of media.

Donbas, a region historically defined by its abundant resources and heavy industry, has long stood on the frontlines of division and conflict. For Kolomytskyi, it was a place where violence and crime were a constant threat. The enduring collective trauma and its effects on the consciousness of the people there posed a continual threat to his existence as someone living outside societal norms. His encounter with Russian Cosmism and the Russian Avant-Garde provided a form of salvation. These experiences and aesthetics continue to deeply influence his artistic practice.

During his time living in Japan, he experienced the COVID-19 pandemic, the escalation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the death of his mother—the only family he had left in Donbas. The words of Nikolai Fedorov, father of Russian Cosmism—“Death is a mistake”—became a deep conviction for Kolomytskyi and now serve as a foundation for his recent work.

Kolomytskyi’s attempts to view the world through a lens that diverges from mainstream science may defy conventional logic. Yet through the distinctive visual languages he has developed despite various constraints, we are invited to perceive the depth of the worlds he envisions. This parallel-world perspective not only carries a critical stance toward contemporary society but also gestures toward new ways of imagining hope.

Kolomytskyi has independently developed his own interpretation of Russian Cosmism, which pursues immortality and the material resurrection of the dead. Through his practice, he seeks to bring into existence “Citizen Zinc.” According to him, “Citizen Zinc” represents those who have perished under the pressures of contemporary systems—war, bureaucracy, abandonment.

This exhibition will present lithographs depicting “Citizen Zinc,” manuals for its construction, antennas for receiving its voice, and monuments dedicated to recording, reviving, and preserving life beyond the limits of death and planets. This is a rare opportunity to experience Kolomytskyi’s philosophy and practice, which has evolved through diverse locations and circumstances. We warmly invite you to visit.
