Matsudo City strives to become a city where art meets life, and continues to create opportunities to experience diverse art and culture, as well as initiatives that will revitalize the region and improve the city's appeal. It has been six years since the Matsudo International Science Art Festival was established in 2018 by citizens. We have had the opportunity to meet many “artists” full of creative and imaginative energies.

What do we mean by “artists”? In contemporary usage, the word “art” may mean the work of art, but look further and it is rooted in “craftsmanship” – the work done by hands in general ※. In other words, it means “a person who creates something.”

Someone who creates artwork that explores global issues, someone who creates tools that make our lives better, someone who creates an environment to reinforce security and to protect nature, someone who cooks delicious dishes, someone who creates a friendly atmosphere, someone who creates a safe haven for others…If we call creating something “art”, we, as citizens, may be able to call ourselves “artists”.

We would like to “open up” slightly more of each “creation” at this year’s edition. Opening up our minds to perspectives not yet discovered. Finding opportunities for your enthusiasm and eagerness to flourish. For those who have started creating something, this is a place to showcase it, and an opportunity to expand it further into the public realm of the city.

This year’s theme is “City of Artists: Opening Up Creation”.
Noticing how flavour changes depending on how vegetables are cut, realizing different perspectives when showing our work to others – our worldview may slightly shift through the act of creation.
In an era overflowing with information and symbols, we tend to spend a lot of time passively interacting with the world. But the sense of reality that can be gained through active “creation”, is actually difficult to obtain anywhere else.

“Opening up” each “creation” and harmoniously connecting with each other may subtly enrich our lives. Much like the butterfly effect, these connections could have a larger impact on the world. Even if we fail in “creation”, we can admire our own efforts and appreciate the uniqueness of experience while having a good laugh together.

This year’s theme for our partner, Ars Electronica, is “HOPE – who will turn the tide” To turn the tide may require an individual artistry – a ‘power of imagination’ that keeps going in the face of adversity.

The simple act of drawing a line can be a catalyst for change. We wish to respect self-motivated “creative” people as “artists”.
What would you create?
