Matsue History Museum
Finished

Artists

Jodei Kobayashi
Kobayashi Jodei (1753 - 1813) was a joiner (woodwork craftsman) who served Matsudaira Harusato (pennamed Fumai), the seventh lord of the Matsudaira clan of Matsue Domain. He excelled in openwork carving and working with thick wood, and created tobacco trays, tea boxes, and buildings. His skills, which were praised as "divine," influenced craftsmen in later generations.
This exhibition will introduce the splendor of Matsue's proud woodworking culture through Jodei's works and those of people influenced by Jodei.
