Denchu Hirakushi
A special exhibition themed around the Denchu Hirakushi House (Memorial Hall), which will undergo seismic reinforcement and renovation in 2024, will be held in four parts. The first chapter will focus on "Kodaira" and the "Memorial Hall."

Denchu Hirakushi built a residence in Taito (then Shitaya) in 1922, the year before the Great Kanto Earthquake, and lived there for nearly 50 years. Before the war, Hirakushi visited Kodaira, fell in love with the lush landscape of the Tamagawa Aqueduct, and purchased land. In 1968, at the age of 96, Hirakushi built a house for an ailing daughter and moved there in 1970. For the next ten years, Hirakushi lived in Kodaira with family until passing away in 1979 in a room overseen by the work, "Yakushi Nyorai."

This exhibition will explore how life in Kodaira influenced Hirakushi's work and thoughts, while highlighting Hirakushi's relationship with Hiroshi Oe, the architect of the residence where the final years were spent, and showcasing Oe's work.
