Michinoku - Beloved Buddhas

Iwate Museum of Art
Finished
The time was the Edo period. In the main halls of temples throughout Japan, neat golden statues of Buddha made in Kamigata (Kyoto) and Edo (Tokyo) were enshrined as the principal image, symbolizing the teachings of Buddhism. On the other hand, in temples, small halls and shrines that were not main halls, and in private homes, simple wooden statues of Kami-sama and Hotoke-sama, carved by local carpenters and craftsmen, were enshrined. Such statues created by people who are not so-called Buddhist priests are called "folk Buddha" and have been attracting attention in recent years. In the northern Tohoku region, many unique folk Buddhas still remain and are carefully protected. Their gentle and relaxing forms can be said to be a form of prayer, entrusted with the earnest wishes of people living in the harsh climate of the region.

This exhibition brings together 130 folk Buddhist artworks from the northern Tohoku region, which have been neglected because of their simplicity, to introduce their charms for the first time and to reexamine the essence of faith and art in Japan.
