Mid-Century Muji

Atelier Muji Ginza
Until May 12
During the Tokyo Modernism 2024 exhibition period, Atelier Muji Ginza will hold an exhibition titled "Mid-Century Muji," themed around the design style "Mid-Century Modern" born in the mid-20th century, specifically the 1940s to 1960s.

Muji's products, sold for over 40 years, have been created with various purposes, such as being the antithesis of the times or enriching daily life. They are designed to eliminate excessive decoration and seek simplicity that suits the era and lifestyle. In this exhibition, existing Muji products will serve as a base to create and propose products that fit into the Mid-Century Modern space.

For planning and furniture production, we have enlisted the expertise of Tetsumasa Suda, a pioneer in Japan in the field that witnessed the explosive movement of Mid-Century Modern in America in the mid-1990s and has been conveying its style to Japan in real-time. With Suda's playful ideas, Muji's products will transform gracefully into the Mid-Century Modern style with unique colors and materials. This exhibition provides a space resembling an "architect's room," composed of these products. By stepping out of the mindset that MUJI's furniture and products are a certain way, possibilities are expanded and there is a richness of enjoying and engaging with each customer's preferences freely.
