Minamo - Depictions of Water

Kagoshima City Museum of Art
Finished
In ancient Greece and Rome, water was considered to be one of the components that surrounded the world, along with "fire," "air," and "earth. Water has been represented by artists around the world as rivers, seas, rain, and other scenes in a variety of subjects. Depending on the geographical features, time of day, and weather conditions, water can show a variety of expressions, from gentle currents and violent splashing currents to stagnant, calm, rippling, rough, and swirling waves. The waves stimulate the creativity of many artists and can be seen in landscapes, historical paintings, and richly ornamented designs, as well as in the superb techniques and diverse expressions of the artists.

This exhibition introduces three themes from the museum's collection of works associated with water, focusing on "Minamo," meaning the surface of the water.
