The year 2023 marks the 350th anniversary of the opening of Mitsui Echigoya in 1673. In commemoration of this occasion, the Mitsui Collection and Mitsui Memorial Museum of Art are holding a special exhibition. Takatoshi Mitsui (1622-94), the founder of the Mitsui Group, was an innovative businessman of the Edo period who overturned the business practices of the time with his "no cash on delivery" business method, opening the kimono store Echigoya at the age of 52. Takatoshi and his children succeeded and developed the business through various innovative commercial methods.
Along with the development of their business, the Mitsui families also focused on cultural activities such as the tea ceremony. In particular, they collected many famous tea ceremony utensils from the Kyoho and Genbun periods (1716-41), a period of rapid growth. Among them are several masterpieces that have been handed down to our museum.
This exhibition aims to provide visitors with an easy-to-understand view of Mitsui's business, culture, and beliefs from its founding to its growth period through historical materials that are not usually seen, such as the Souchikuisho, Mitsui's family code, and thick business ledgers, as well as many famous tea ceremony utensils collected during its rapid growth, paintings, and items handed down from the ancestors.
The purpose of this exhibition is to provide visitors with an easy-to-understand display of Mitsui's business, culture, and beliefs from its founding to its growth. Some of the key points of Mitsui's business and the secrets of its development without going under even after three generations may be relevant to today's business.
