The photographer Miyako Ishiuchi, active both domestically and internationally, relocated her base of operations from Yokohama to her birthplace of Kiryu six years ago, in 2018.
This exhibition traces her journey, starting with "Faraway Time," a series shot around Kiryu in 1976 that predates her debut work and representative piece "Zesshou, Yokosuka Story." It includes "Apartment," which won her the Kimura Ihei Award in 1979, "Night Town," a series she continues to work on that captures the remnants of Japan’s former red-light districts, "Mother's," featuring everyday items belonging to her late mother, and "Hiroshima," which uniquely documents the belongings of atomic bomb victims, with new works included. Alongside these prominent series, the exhibition will feature numerous vintage prints made by Ishiuchi herself. Additionally, her new series "From Kiryu," which captures the town of Kiryu, will be unveiled for the first time. This exhibition marks the first time since its opening in 1989 that the Okawa Museum of Art will utilize all of its gallery spaces. In this space, comprising a series of individual rooms created by renovating a company dormitory, visitors will embark on a journey through the layers of time that Miyako Ishiuchi has confronted.
