Born in Morioka City, Koko Omoishi (1934-) attended Morioka Second High School before studying oil painting at the Morioka Junior College of Fine Arts and Crafts under the guidance of Shozo Fukazawa and his wife, Shizuko. She began her journey as a painter under their tutelage. From 1975 to 1978, she studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Tours, France. Inspired by the beautiful landscapes and architecture of foreign lands, she created vibrant paintings. She received the Honor Award at the Salon des Artistes Français and was selected for the Salon d'Automne during her time in France. Upon her return to Japan, she continued to receive awards through organizations such as Issuikai and the Association of Women Artists. From 1987 to 1994, she served as a professor in the Department of Fine Arts at Tokyo Jyosin Women's Junior College, and from 2001 to 2005, she served as the director of the Murasaki-no-Hana Art Museum in her hometown of Morioka. She has played a significant role in mentoring the next generation of artists and promoting art in the local community. In addition to exhibitions in Iwate Prefecture, she held a joint exhibition with Minako Kakuzabata at the Bantei Goro Memorial Museum in 1998, followed by a large-scale solo exhibition at the Iwate Prefectural Citizens' Hall in 2005. In 2017, she held another solo exhibition at the Ishigami-no-Oka Art Museum, further solidifying her reputation as a prominent painter representing Iwate. She continues to exhibit as a member of the Artists' Federation and as a permanent committee member of Issuikai. This exhibition at our museum marks Koko Omoishi's return after 25 years. It will feature a selection of her representative oil paintings from her earliest works to the present, along with original illustrations serialized in local newspapers, providing insight into the enduring charm of her artistry.
