Momoka Miyoshi
Momoka Miyoshi is an artist who, in March 2022, completed her studies in Cultural Property Conservation (Sculpture) at the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts. She specializes in sculpting relaxed depictions of Nio statues and Komainu on their days off.
At the age of five, when Miyoshi lost her father, she inquired about the afterlife, receiving the response "after death, you go to Buddha's place and have a party every day." This experience led her to imagine that even the seemingly stern Buddhist statues might be spending their time in a relaxed manner. Additionally, her grandfather's presence has influenced her current artistic style. Initially appearing formidable with a shaved head and sturdy physique, the silent and solemn grandfather, much like a Nio statue, was an object of awe for Miyoshi in her childhood. However, upon learning that he was also a humorous person who made jokes, she realized there were sides to him she hadn't known. The concept of depicting the off-duty days of Buddhist statues stemmed from such experiences.
As opportunities to worship Buddhist statues decrease in a more peaceful society, Miyoshi expresses gratitude in her work, stating that her current existence is thanks to the people who couldn't live without relying on Buddhist statues. In this exhibition following her inaugural solo exhibition held in April, Miyoshi presents 15 works, including new pieces.
