Artists

Morihiro Hosokawa
Morihiro Hosokawa (1938- ) retired from politics at the age of 60 and began to live a quiet life in his mansion "Butoan" in Yugawara, Kanagawa Prefecture. He began to create pottery in a wide range of styles, including Raku, Korai, Karatsu, Shino, and Shigaraki, and his creative interests have expanded to include lacquer painting, calligraphy, and ink painting, and he continues to experiment with a variety of materials and techniques to create large-scale works even now in his 80s.

In recent years, he has painted and dedicated fusuma-e (sliding door) paintings and barrier paintings for temples with which he has ties in Kyoto and Nara. In these works, he expresses his wish to preserve Japanese historical culture and the traditional aesthetic sense and sensibility of the Japanese people.

In today's hectic and anxious society, and when considering how to find fulfillment in life beyond the age of 60, Morihiro Hosokawa's search for beauty may represent an ideal worldview.

This exhibition introduces the world of Morihiro Hosokawa's beauty through 100 works of art.
