Morihiro Hosokawa (1938-), born as the 18th head of the Hosokawa family, the former lords of the Kumamoto domain, served as the governor of Kumamoto Prefecture, and as a member of both the House of Representatives and the House of Councillors. In 1993, he became the 79th Prime Minister of Japan. After retiring from politics, he has lived a life of leisure surrounded by nature at his residence in Yugawara, Kanagawa Prefecture, while actively engaging in the creation of tea ceramics, calligraphy, and painting, receiving high acclaim.
The Paramita Museum held an exhibition in 2008, primarily showcasing his ceramic works. However, in recent years, he has expanded his creative pursuits by dedicating fusuma paintings, folding screens, and mural paintings to renowned temples.
This exhibition will introduce Hosokawa's artistic endeavors, including the previously dedicated fusuma paintings and mural paintings, and explore his wide-ranging exploration of beauty in various fields such as ceramics, lacquerware, oil painting, and ink-wash painting. Additionally, the special exhibition of "Red Cliffs Boating Scene" (eight fusuma paintings) donated by Hosokawa Morihiro to Tenju-an, a sub-temple of Nanzen-ji Temple in Kyoto in 2023 will take place.
