Moriichi Kumagai (1880-1977) was a painter from Tsukechimura, Enagun, Gifu Prefecture (now Tsukechicho, Nakatsugawa City). His unique style of depicting familiar nature and creatures with simple forms and clear colors has been called the "Morikazu style" and is well known to the public.
In 1904, he graduated at the top of his class from the Western painting department of the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, the predecessor of today's Tokyo University of the Arts, and began his career as a painter. After participating in the Bunten, Nika, and Niki exhibitions, he became unaffiliated and exhibited his works freely as a solitary painter.
This exhibition, with the cooperation of the Tendo City Museum of Art, which has a large collection of works by Kumagai, will feature approximately 75 oil paintings and Japanese-style paintings, including representative works from his early to late years, and will introduce the life of Morikazu Kumagai, a painter who continued to pursue his unique expression. Photographs by Takeshi Fujimori, a photographer who continued to photograph Kumagai in his later years, will also be on display.
