In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the museum's opening in April 2024, Museum Haus Kasuya is planning exhibitions throughout the year featuring significant artists closely associated with our institution. The inaugural event leading up to the 30th-anniversary celebration will feature a solo exhibition by Yu Matsuzawa.
The museum's association with Matsuzawa dates back to 1995 when his first solo exhibition, "Quantum Art Declaration," was featured as the museum's inaugural exhibition. In 2002, Matsuzawa's second solo exhibition, "80-Year Problem, Declaration, and Public Case" was held. Recognized as one of the important artists in contemporary art, Matsuzawa has been introduced through five solo exhibitions (including posthumous exhibitions) and group exhibitions.
Since receiving the revelation "Erase the object" in June 1964, Matsuzawa departed from his previous sculptural work and delved into the world of pure conceptualism, presenting works and performances incorporating text both domestically and internationally. His participation in the São Paulo Biennial in 1977 and a performance at Tate Modern in 2001 solidified his status as a pioneer in conceptual art, earning global acclaim.
Even after his passing in 2006 at the age of 84, Matsuzawa's reputation has only grown. In 2009, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York featured his works in the exhibition "Inside/Outside Amsterdam," and in 2014, he was selected as an exhibiting artist for the Yokohama Triennale.
This exhibition will showcase previously unrevealed works from the museum's collection, including pieces from "Ψ no Hako" (published in 1983) and "Nine Mandalas" (published in 1982 by Media Galerie, Switzerland). Additionally, the exhibition will present archival materials from past exhibitions, providing a comprehensive overview of Matsuzawa's artistic journey.
