Exhibition of Nanbu Tekki

Morioka History and Culture Museum
Finished
During the Edo period, Morioka flourished as the castle town of the Morioka domain, giving rise to numerous craftworks. One such craft is Nanbu ironware, which thrived under favorable conditions for iron production within the domain, including access to iron, sand, and charcoal, coupled with the encouragement of the domain lord. Despite experiencing various ups and downs, artisans dedicated to preserving traditional techniques continued to explore forms that reflected the times and lifestyles, incorporating new ideas into their ironware. This tradition has been passed down to the present day.

This exhibition will primarily see works created by active artisans until 2023. This exhibition gives visitors a chance to experience the essence of iron crafted by these artisans and the sentiments they have imbued into Nanbu ironware.
