Painter and picture book artist Naoko Machida is highly acclaimed for her delicate touch and bold composition of her picture book stories, which create a space where the text comes alive. Machida's picture books are often depicted with cats.
Machida's motto is "A cat at every opportunity. In various stories, such as fairy tales, Tono Monogatari (Tales of Tono), and picture books of ghost stories, cats appear as the main characters and sometimes as supporting characters. The cats depicted in her work, from their fur to their gestures, are meticulously rendered, showing Machida's keen eye for observation and compassion for the cats that live with her.
This exhibition introduces original picture book drawings, paintings, rough sketches, and other valuable production materials from his debut to her latest works.
