Artists

Naondo Nakamura
Naondo Nakamura (1905-1981) was an artist born in Kamikawa Village (now Ueda City), Ogata County, Nagano Prefecture. Encouraged by Kanae Yamamoto, he became a sculptor in his youth and gradually gained recognition at the Inten Exhibition.

In 1952, he moved to Paris, where his gouache (opaque watercolors) works were well received. After returning to Japan, he became a member of the Nika-kai, and his numerous sculptures, paintings, and prints established his image as a painter of melancholy women and nudes.

This exhibition introduces Nakamura's unique life through large monumental sculptures created during the war and Orientalist paintings that gained popularity in Europe.
