Nell Shiina is an artist with identities in England and Japan who creates sculptures and accompanying drawings and paintings that express the boundaries between existence and absence, based on anatomy and philosophy. After living and working in London and Paris, she has now relocated to Kyoto, where she also owns Flim Kyoto, a gallery with an atelier and café.
In this exhibition, a 3-meter high concrete sculpture will be displayed in “Hashintei," a Japanese rock garden created by Mirei Shigemori, along with new drawings. The sculpture is a collaboration between Arata Suzuki (architectural design) and MAT (construction). The work is produced by outputting the data as concrete using Japan's first 3D printer for architectural use.
The columns, which are formed by transferring clay, plaster, and concrete, make viewers aware of their own existence through their shadows, and in turn, make them feel the illusion hidden in Komyoin and Hashintei.
