Gerhard Richter
A native of Dresden, Germany, Gerhard Richter (b. 1932) has explored new possibilities in painting throughout his over 50-year career. He got his start in the 1960s with the Photo Painting series, based on black-and-white photographs from newspapers and magazines, private photographs, and a technique of blurring an entire image by lightly rubbing the surface of the picture with a brush.

Richter employs a diverse range of media, including oil painting, photography, and digital printing. In the Abstract Painting series, he uses a squeegee as long as the width of the picture to create numerous layers of color. The traces that appear as a result of spreading and erasing the paint strongly piqued the artist’s interest. The newly acquired work Strip(926-3) is part of the eponymous series, which Richter began in 2011. After fragmenting a digital image made by scanning one of the Abstract Painting series and then recombining the pieces, Richter ended up with an expanse of countless strips. In this first public showing of Strip (926-3), we examine the charms of Richter’s art by presenting other works by the artist from the museum collection.
