Ryoji Arai
Ryoji Arai (1956–) is an internationally acclaimed artist who was the first Japanese recipient of the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award in 2005. While best known for his picture books, his rich artistic output also includes paintings, music and theater set design. This exhibition introduces us to Arai’s creative activities through his paintings, original picture book artwork, and illustrations, in addition to new three-dimensional installations and a collection of beloved objects. During the journey that has been his career, this artist has transformed the uncertainty and fear of confronting the unknown into a joyous exploration of new realms of creativity, and this unique exhibition invites us to follow the trajectory of his journey, while also witnessing his most recent endeavors. Ryoji Arai has wandered through many lands, but his journey is far from over. Join us at this exhibition to experience the world of an artist who manages to be perpetually “new born.”
