Cats are curious and have cheating hearts, but they are somehow lovable. The "11 Piki no Neko" series, loved by all generations, is a long-selling picture book series, the first of which was published in 1967. The creator of the series, Noboru Baba (1927-2001), was active as a cartoonist in the immediate postwar period. Starting with children's cartoons that heartwarmingly depicted children's games and adventures, he went on to publish serial cartoons in weekly comic magazines and newspapers for adults, while also creating numerous picture books featuring animals, mountain men, and other characters. His wide-ranging activities over the past half-century have always been in search of "good laughs" that would soften the hearts of readers.
In addition to Baba's representative original manga and picture book illustrations, this unprecedented retrospective exhibition will introduce sketches that convey his creative process and keen eye for observation, one-page cat drawings and illustrations, three-dimensional work he enjoyed making, as well as work from his childhood and before his debut. This is an opportunity to look back on Baba's entire creative process with approximately 500 works and documents, and enjoy the entire Noboru Baba world full of humor and kawaii.
