Nomura Shojiro and the Age of Japonism: The Man Who Spread Kimono to the World

National Museum of Japanese History
7 more days
This exhibition introduces the character of Nomura Shojiro (1880-1943) through the Nomura Shojiro Costume Collection, one of the museum's most representative collections.

The "Nomura Shojiro Costume Collection" is a large collection of clothing and accessories built by Nomura Shojiro, a Kyoto art dealer who collected early modern Japanese dyed and woven textiles, mainly kimonos. The collection includes well over 1,000 items, including kimonos, "Jidai Kosode Hinagata Byobu" folding screens made to resemble kimonos hanging from a clothes rack, and kosode fabrics bound in the shape of sleeves.

During the time when Shojiro was active, Japonism was at its height in Europe and the United States. Chapter 1 looks at Shojiro's sales strategies as an art dealer targeting Westerners, and traces how he spread the beauty of kimono abroad.

Furthermore, Shojiro's collection was significant for the study of the history of manners and customs and for promoting the industry at the time. In Chapter 2, we will explore how Shojiro, as a collector, played a role in raising awareness of the importance of kimono in Japan.

From these two perspectives, we will look back on the life of Shojiro, who promoted the beauty and importance of kimono both at home and abroad, as well as his collection.
