Paul Cézanne, Sotaro Yasui, Ryuzaburo Umehara, Takeji Fujishima, Kokei Kobayashi et al.
The founder of Eiseibunko, Moritatsu Hosokawa (1883-1970), was also known as "the lord of art" for his extensive collection of Zen paintings by Hakuin and Sengai, swords, modern paintings, and Oriental art. Paul Cézanne's (1839-1906) watercolor "Ascending the Road," which is on view for the first time in many years in this exhibition, was published in the literary magazine "Shirakaba" and was purchased by Hosokawa himself in Paris in 1926 during his stay in Europe. It is considered to be one of Cézanne's earliest works and the first brought to Japan.

Hosokawa also supported the activities of "Shirakaba" through his friendship with Saneatsu Mushakoji (1885-1976) and others who were classmates at Gakushuin and was also a friend of artists of his time, including Ryuzaburo Umehara (1888-1986) and Sotaro Yasui (1888-1955). He also formed friendships with artists of his time. Their close friendship can be seen in the letters and anecdotes that remain in the Eiseibunko collection.

This exhibition introduces an aspect of Eiseibunko's collection of modern paintings, focusing on Western-style paintings collected by the Hosokawa family as a result of their interactions with these artists.
