Painters of Paris - Marquet, Utrillo, Saeki, and Ogisu

The Yamazaki Mazak Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Albert Marquet, Maurice Utrillo, Yuzo Saeki, Takanori Ogisu
Albert Marquet (1875-1947), Maurice Utrillo (1883-1955), Yuzo Saeki (1898-1928), and Takanori Ogisu (1901-1986) were painters who loved Paris. For Marquet and Utrillo, Paris and its suburbs were familiar and beloved cities, while for Saeki and Ogisu, they were cities of longing that "awakened the joy of painting" and were a never-ending source of creativity.

This exhibition will feature works from the collections of the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, Inazawa City Ogisu Memorial Art Museum, Nagoya City Art Museum, BB Plaza Museum of Art, Pola Museum of Art, Yokkaichi City Museum, and private collectors, as well as works from the collection of the Yamazaki Mazak Museum, including Marquet's "Paris, Rue du Louvre", Utrillo's "The Windmills of Sanoy" and "Rue de la Marcade." The exhibition includes seven works by Marquet, ten works by Utrillo, eight works by Saeki, and twenty-seven works by Ogisu, for a total of fifty-two works. This includes Ogisu’s “Landscape,” formerly owned by Teruyuki Yamazaki (former chairman of Yamazaki Mazak Co., Ltd.), the first director of the Yamazaki Mazak Museum who established the foundation of the museum through his collection of French art.

The exhibition room of the museum, reminiscent of a 19th-century French mansion, will display works depicting Paris and its suburbs from the early 20th century to the 1970s, allowing visitors to enjoy the charm of each of the four painters' works, as well as the differences in expression between two paintings of the same place by one artist at different times, and the differences between two paintings of the same place by different artists. The exhibition also includes a letter from Ogisu to Teruyuki Yamazaki and his wife, introducing an interaction between the artist and the collector.
