Paris: The Belle Epoque Exhibition - French Modern Posters

The Niigata Prefectural Museum of Modern Art
Finished
From the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, France was known as the "Belle Epoque," meaning the beautiful age or the good and prosperous times, and the streets were decorated with glamorous posters designed by Mucha, Lautrec, Cassandre, and others.

During this period, France was undergoing industrial modernization, the population of Paris and other large cities was increasing, the streets were overflowing with goods, and people were enjoying the modern lifestyle. The Belle Epoque was also a time when advertising design flourished. The elegant "Art Nouveau" that emerged at the end of the 19th century and "Art Deco" that symbolized the industrial age of the 1920s were the main axis of poster design during this period.

This exhibition introduces approximately 130 masterpieces of French posters from the Belle Époque period from the collection of the Kyoto Institute of Technology Museum of Arts and Crafts.
