Peter Halley
Ceysson & Bénétière Tokyo presents, from May 28 to August 22, 2026, a selection of previously unseen works by Peter Halley. Created between 2025 and 2026, this body of work highlights the enduring vitality of Halley’s artistic exploration. As a central figure of the international art scene, Halley continues to investigate the structures of the contemporary world through his iconic vocabulary and signature materials: Roll-a-Tex and Day-Glo fluorescent acrylic.

The exhibition takes its title, “Parable,” from the monumental centerpiece of the show. Alongside this work, the exhibition features eight paintings and seven works on paper, sophisticated studies that combine digital print bases with pearlescent acrylic to offer a window into the artist’s process.

The artist offers the following perspective on the evolution of this new series:

“The smaller paintings in this exhibition belong to a series Halley has made since the 1990s that he refers to as “small prisons” or “small cells.” All of these paintings comprise one prison or one cell placed on a rectangular base. In the past, each of these cells or prisons was situated firmly on its base. But in recent years, these configurations have become markedly unstable. The prisons and cells now slip away from their backgrounds and the bases upon which they sit, introducing a sense of imbalance into what was once a solid, rational configuration.

The works in this exhibition continue that condition at larger scales. The medium and large-scale works extend this instability by combining multiple prisons within a single composition, arranged in stacked and modular configurations above a shared horizontal base. The elements shift in relation to one another, functioning as units of displacement rather than single, isolated forms.

Across scales, this new fragmentation marks a rupture in Halley’s work, as cells and prisons are now torn from their settings and reassembled into new compositional structures.”

Through these works, Halley reflects on how the geometric patterns of our physical and virtual worlds shape our existence. By revisiting his iconic motifs, he continues to analyze the systems of control and flow that define modernity. Geometry becomes a diagram of our reality—a network of interconnected compartments where light itself defines color.
