Poetic Images of Butterflies: Modern Poet Fuyue Anzai and Kotaro

Migishi Kotaro Museum of Art

Artists

Kotaro Migishi, Fuyue Anzai
A flock of butterflies crosses the sea, while seashells lie on the sand. The series "Butterflies and Seashells" represents a dreamlike world that painter Kotaro Migishi (1903-1934) reached in the early stages of his late career.

In the contemporary poetry scene, Fuyue Anzai (1898-1965) preceded Migishi with his short poem "A single butterfly crossed the Tartar Strait." published in the poetry collection "Warship Jasmine" in 1929. This one-line poem, which evokes the solitary silhouette of a butterfly against the vast sea, is still revered today as a representative work of Japanese modernist poetry.

Although they never met during their lifetimes, Usaburo Toyama, a friend of Migishi, was a member of the literary circle of "Poetry and Poetics" (1928-1931) where Anzai was active, and it is believed that Migishi encountered Anzai's poetry through this magazine. Conversely, Anzai viewed Migishi's posthumous works at the Independent Exhibition in 1935 (Showa 10) and highly praised them. Even after the war, Anzai continued to reference Takamura's work, overlaying the imagery of Migishi's "Orchestra" onto the cityscape ruins.

This exhibition introduces the art of these two artists, who were prominent figures of modernism in the early Showa era, with "butterflies" as a common theme. Experience the vibrant resonance of these two artists' fresh sensibilities.
