Poison

National Museum of Nature and Science
FinishedReservation Required
Poisons are understood as substances that cause harm to living organisms, including humans. However, some poisons are not only harmful but also have medicinal effects. Among "substances that have some effect on living organisms," those that have a positive effect on humans are called drugs, and those that have a negative effect are called poisons, which can be thought of as a concept created by humans to understand and utilize the diverse and complex natural world. Even something useful to the human body can become a poison if taken in excess. Toxicity also differs depending on the level of sensitivity, as seen in allergic reactions.

In this exhibition, specialists in the fields of zoology, botany, geology, anthropology, and science and engineering will delve thoroughly into the poisons that exist everywhere in nature, including animals, plants, fungi, minerals, and man-made poisons, and explain them from the unique perspective of the National Museum of Nature and Science. This is the first special exhibition on the theme of poisons to be held at the museum.
