Princesses’ Hina Dolls and Utensils

Hayashibara Museum of Art
Finished
March 3rd is the day of the Doll Festival, a seasonal festival celebration that originally originated from an ancient Chinese purification ceremony. In the Heian period (794-1185), people used to hold an event called “Hina-nagashi,” in which dolls were floated down a river to ward off evil spirits. In the Edo period (1603-1867), this event was combined with “hina-play,” in which young children played with small dolls and their tools, and miniature dolls were made to pray for the growth of their children and to ward off evil.
This exhibition introduces a variety of small and lovely dolls and implements, mainly from the Edo to Meiji periods, that belonged to the Ikeda family, feudal lords of Okayama
