Rediscovery! Hideyoshi Toyotomi''s Osaka Castle - Gold Leaf Roof Tiles and Family Crest Tiles

Osaka Museum of History
Finished
The current Osaka Castle was built on the site of the Osaka Castle constructed by Hideyoshi Toyotomi, with soil added by the Tokugawa Shogunate to create a new castle. Currently, construction of a facility to showcase the stone walls of Osaka Castle, which were buried underground, is underway. Once completed, visitors should be able to "rediscover" Hideyoshi Toyotomi's Osaka Castle.

Osaka Castle was a magnificent embodiment of Toyotomi's policies and systems. Throughout the castle and its surroundings stood the residences of warriors from across the country who supported Toyotomi, while luxurious roof tiles and towering stone walls intimidated onlookers. Roof tiles, which enhanced the beauty of the roofs, were indispensable to Toyotomi's castle construction. The roof tiles unearthed during excavation are undoubtedly part of Toyotomi's Osaka Castle. With each discovery made through excavations, Osaka Castle has been "rediscovered," and the results have been accumulating for many years. In this exhibition, approximately 200 roof tiles from the Toyotomi period, represented by "gold leaf roof tiles" and "family crest tiles," will be displayed, allowing visitors to rediscover the often overlooked aspects of Toyotomi's Osaka Castle.
