Gallery KITAI is pleased to present “encounter”, a two-person exhibition featuring Reiko Tsunashima and Fumie Onuki. This exhibition has been conceived as an opportunity for two artists—each of whom has long pursued and deepened a distinct mode of expression—to meet and intersect through the shared medium of paper. Tsunashima evokes poetic landscapes of ink “Scene of Sumi” through subtle gradations and the organic diffusion of sumi, while Onuki has developed a practice that layers papers of differing qualities to create expressions that are at once delicate and powerful. Though their approaches differ, both artists occupy significant positions within the field of art centered on paper. In recent years, paper as a medium has been re-evaluated beyond its traditional role as mere support, emerging instead as a domain of expression that encompasses materiality, structure, and temporality. Through the encounter of these two practices, this exhibition seeks to present both the possibilities of paper-based art and its position in the present moment.
