The Midi was once regarded as the transit point for artists traveling from Paris to Italy in search of scenic spots and works by the old masters. However, from the end of the nineteenth century onwards, many artists chose to work in Vence, Nice, Marseilles, and other parts of the south of France.

The rich nature surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea and mountains and the dazzling light captivated the artists, and, at times, they were even enticed to create works employing local techniques such as pottery. Some are known to have settled in the Midi as their final abode and undertaken grand projects such as a mural or a chapel as a compilation of their artistic career. On the other hand, we must not forget that, during the war, the Midi was also where artists who were detained as enemy aliens or those who headed to the ports in order to emigrate to the US produced works.

This exhibition focuses on the Midi as a location where art unfolded in the twentieth century. Through approximately one hundred works by twenty-five or so artists from museums and other collections in Japan, the extensive rapports developed there and the expressions and techniques revealed by the artists are introduced.
