Rie Shimada is an illustrator who captures various urban scenes discovered during her strolls.
"Tokyo, which may seem chaotic at first glance, reveals its beauty amid everyday life when viewed from different perspectives," she explains. Through her illustrations, she portrays warmth that differs from the actual color tones by filtering her observations rather than depicting them as they are. Each illustration includes the latitude and longitude coordinates of the depicted location, inviting viewers to experience the scenes depicted in the artwork firsthand and serving as punctuation marks within the whitespace of the page.
In this exhibition, Shimada will present two new pieces set in Kyoto, her first depictions of the city, as well as giclée (high-definition inkjet print) works depicting Tokyo's skyscrapers and Osaka's Expo construction site. Additionally, there will be advance sales of her first-ever art book and a wide range of merchandise, including T-shirts, handkerchiefs, and postcard sets.
