Risaburo Kudo + Taikichi Irie + Tazo Nagano "Kanbutsu-zanmai - Gazing at Buddha Statues"

Irie Taikichi Memorial Museum of Photography Nara City
Finished

Artists

Risaburo Kudo, Taikichi Irie, Tazo Nagano
This exhibition features three photographers—Risaburo Kudo, Taikichi Irie, and Tazo Nagano—who dedicated their careers to photographing Buddhist statues in Nara. Kudo was a pioneering figure in photographing ancient art in Nara, active from the mid-Meiji period to the Taisho period. His photographs, capturing cultural properties before their restoration, are highly valued as historical documents and have been re-evaluated for their significance.

Irie and Nagano were active as Buddhist statue photographers after World War II. Notably, their works were featured alternately in the "Nara Yamatoji" Buddhist statue posters, which began in 1954. These posters introduced the beauty of Buddhist statues to people both in Japan and abroad.

Titled "Kanbutsu-zanmai" (Absorption in the Contemplation of Buddha), this exhibition draws from the writings of Yaichi Aizu, a poet and art historian who loved Nara. This term signifies "devoting oneself to the study and appreciation of Buddhist statues." The exhibition showcases the beauty of Buddhist statues as captured by Risaburo Kudo, Taikichi Irie, and Tazo Nagano.
