Artists

Rokuro Taniuchi
On display in the Rokuro Taniuchi Pavilion are the original paintings for the covers of the weekly magazine Shukan Shincho. Creating them was the life work of Rokuro Taniuchi (1921-1981), who produced 1,300 of them. This exhibition presents a selection from that huge oeuvre of fifty paintings at a time, changing the exhibits four times a year. The choice of paintings is based on a variety of themes, with a new theme chosen for each exhibition.

The first exhibition in 2023, titled "Imagination of Shadows," will focus on the "shadows" depicted in Taniuchi's covers. There are various sources of light, such as electric lamps, flames, the sun, the moon, and stars, which illuminate objects and at the same time create "shadows". Shadows, which reflect the shapes of people and objects and change their shapes and sizes, have been a familiar and mysterious presence for us since ancient times, and at the same time, have been an object of awe. Taniuchi has also used "shadows" as a subject matter in many of his cover paintings. In addition, Taniuchi's title background for the movie "Shacho Sandai-ki (Story of Three Presidents)", newly acquired in 2022, will be exhibited for the first time.
