Fuji Gallery Shinjuku, located on the first basement floor of Hilton Tokyo in Nishi-Shinjuku, will present In Dungeon, a solo exhibition by Romana Machin Tanimura, from January 17 (Sat) to February 28 (Sun), 2026.
Romana Machin Tanimura is a young artist who creates works featuring “monsters” of her own making, rendered in vivid colors and infused with a distinctive sense of humor. In her two-dimensional works, she engages with two-component expanding foam—an unpredictable material whose swelling cannot be fully controlled—accepting its quirks while continuing the process of making. In contrast, her sculptural works are built exclusively with a glue gun and glue sticks, through labor-intensive processes that can take tens of hours, and sometimes even days.
The works born from a combination of meticulous seriousness and an attitude akin to shaping a joke with complete sincerity are full of charm, disarmingly cheap and pop in appearance. At the same time, they can unexpectedly recall the fluttering excitement once felt in childhood—works that embody such a dual appeal. In recent years, Tanimura has expanded her practice to include oil painting and ceramics, presenting unexpectedly inventive works such as urns made for her monsters, and continuing to broaden the scope of her artistic exploration.
The word “Dungeon” in the title of this exhibition refers to a “labyrinth” commonly found in games. It also resonates with the complex underground structure of Hilton Tokyo, the artist herself moving forward while wavering through the act of creation, and the chaotic state of contemporary society in which no clear exit is visible. These three layers overlap to form the conceptual foundation of In Dungeon.The exhibition will primarily feature oil paintings and sculptural works.
