Due to its warm climate, rich scenic beauty represented by Mount Fuji, and the convenience of transportation brought about by the opening of the Tokaido Line, many artists visit Shizuoka. Especially in Hamamatsu, which prospered in the cotton textile industry since the Edo period, some people financially supported the artists who visited the area and those who supported their activities through solo exhibitions and painting meetings. In this exhibition, we will focus on Western-style painters such as Ryusei Kishida, Renzo Kita, and Ichinen Somiya, and reconsider their artistic activities and interactions with cultural figures in Hamamatsu.
Additionally, a concurrent exhibition titled "Hippori Doko Ten - Zenkoku Yukai no Hamabi Collection -" featuring works from the Hamamatsu City Museum of Art's collection that have been exhibited in various locations will be held.
Opened in 1971 as the first public art museum in Shizuoka Prefecture, the Hamamatsu Municipal Museum of Art is known for its collections such as the "Uchida Collection," which mainly consists of Western and Eastern glass paintings, and the "Kosugi Collection," which includes Chinese stone Buddhas and gilt bronze Buddhas. Since its opening, the museum has collected a diverse range of works by artists associated with Shizuoka Prefecture and Hamamatsu City, including Western-style paintings and Japanese paintings, and currently houses over 7,000 pieces. These collections are periodically exhibited at the museum, and at the same time, they are loaned to museums and art galleries nationwide and exhibited in various exhibitions. This exhibition will showcase approximately 50 selected works from the museum's collection that have been loaned to museums and art galleries nationwide over the past five years, regardless of genre.
From the North exit of Hamamatsu Station on the JR Tokaido Main line, take the Entetsu bus and get off at Bijutsukan. The venue is 1 minute walk from there.
