Iwate Museum of Art
Finished

Artists

Ryushi Kawabata
Ryushi Kawabata, born in Wakayama in 1885, began a career as a Western-style painter but transitioned to Nihonga in 1914. Gaining recognition at the Nihon Bijutsuin exhibition, the artist later withdrew to establish the Seiryusha group, advocating site-specific art. Kawabata created works that transcended the norms of Nihonga, captivating audiences with their scale and innovation. Additionally, Kawabata was also known as a haiku poet and undertook five journeys inspired by Matsuo Basho's "The Narrow Road to the Deep North." This exhibition showcases Kawabata's career spanning over 50 years, featuring approximately 100 works that highlight Kawabata's artistic evolution.
