MJK Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Satoshi Otsuka.
Light beams (a single ray of light), light waves (oscillations of light), transmitted light, reflected light, and direct light— rays emitted from different sources converge into luminous fluxes, resonating and intricately crossing paths to reveal a spectrum of expressions. This installation manifests the ever-shifting dynamics of light in motion.
In Counting Waves (Quartet), four mirrors coated with silver films are etched and placed before projected imagery of four distinct waveforms, transforming the delicate play of light emerging from the etchings into a visual ensemble. In Chronoscape (ZZ Ceti) and Chronoscape (VY Canis Majoris)—titles referencing pulsating variable stars—an apparatus that gently flickers and extends rays of light into the depths of the mirrored image is embedded within the dials of antique pendulum clocks. Ripple employs the structure of a book to visualize the intersection of time between photography and mirror within the shifting gradations of light. In 14388272, infinite decimals derived from the square roots of right triangles and infinitely reflecting rays within layered high-reflective glass—two distinct forms of infinity—are superimposed within the aperture of a traditional tea caddy box. These four new works will be on view.
Since his first solo exhibition in 1995, Otsuka has consistently explored light and mirrors as central themes. The works in this exhibition continue his signature method of etching onto mirror surfaces and infusing them with light. Through “the time of viewing,” audiences are invited to experience forms that evolve as events continuously influence one another. We warmly invite you to visit and encounter these works.
