This January, Kohtoh will host Sakura Kanamori's solo exhibition, CHANCE. As Kanamori's debut solo show, CHANCE explores the theme of "chance occurrences" (CHANCE) that has consistently informed her artistic practice, presented through print-based installations.
Born in Tokyo in 2000, Kanamori became interested in the prints of Rembrandt and Redon while pursuing her passion for art in high school. During her university studies in printmaking, she struggled initially with mastering the technical processes. She notes, "I found it difficult to align the physicality of printmaking with my own practice." Over time, however, she became captivated by the unique characteristics of printmaking—how the meticulous handwork passes through machinery, separating the piece from the artist's touch and creating a flat, finished work. This discovery shaped a fresh perspective on her relationship with printmaking.
In Kanamori's creative process, precision and replicability take a backseat to the unpredictable errors, smudges, and bleeding ink that arise during production. She employs unconventional materials as surfaces—glass, fabric, cardboard, and recycled paper—to highlight the unpredictable interactions between ink and medium. These experiments amplify the inherent uncertainty that emerges when the artist relinquishes control during the production phase.
Throughout art history, many creators have deliberately embraced randomness to generate value, ceding control to invite the unexpected. In an era where duplication technologies continue to evolve at a breakneck pace, Kanamori uses printmaking as a tool to reinterpret this dialogue with chance in a contemporary context.
This exhibition will feature new works utilizing silkscreen and lithography. Kanamori invites viewers to witness how the traces of thought are preserved and transformed into tangible works. Don’t miss this remarkable opportunity to experience her latest creations.
