In recent years, there has been a growing concern regarding the preservation and restoration of private collections donated during the period of high economic growth. Typically, the lending and borrowing of collection items are selected based on art historical and aesthetic criteria that align with the theme of the exhibition. The significance of bronze and plaster statues varies from artist to artist, and individual assessments are made based on specific artist research.

However, pre-war exhibition works were predominantly made of plaster, and even though many surviving modern sculptures avoided metal requisition during the Pacific War, with a majority being plaster statues, there has been limited verification of which material is authentically original. Bronze statues were cast posthumously after the war, and there has been little investigation into which material is more authentic. Due to safety concerns, bronze is often chosen for display, and there is often hesitation about whether plaster prototypes should be restored and preserved.

This symposium aims to facilitate discussions between restoration experts who have worked on public plaster prototype collections and curators engaged in preservation and display in actual museum settings. It will present practical examples of appropriate roles and responsibilities between the government and experts and raise questions about the possibilities for preserving and exhibiting modern sculpture plaster prototypes in the future.
