Seeds on the Wind - Educational Printmaking of Aomori

Hachinohe Art Museum
Finished
Aomori's educational prints began in the 1930s and centered around local printmakers such as Junzo Kon. Following the "educational print movement" of the 1950s to 1990s, it spread throughout the prefecture. In Hachinohe, Shokuro Sakamoto enthusiastically taught educational prints at local junior high schools. Some of these works are housed in our museum, including one that served as the model for a scene in Hayao Miyazaki’s film "Kiki’s Delivery Service."

This exhibition introduces the local printmakers who contributed to the development of educational printmaking and the educational prints from within the prefecture that sparked Sakamoto's interest. It showcases Sakamoto’s educational print practices from early works to the culmination of his "Rainbow Boat" series, which includes eight works and a large piece measuring 2m by 4m. Additionally, from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM daily, visitors can enjoy a musical installation by composer Akashi Ikawa.

Furthermore, as part of a related project, the artist unit The Copy Travelers, which is rooted in printmaking, will exhibit the results of their work with local children on the theme of Hachinohe, titled "The Parallel City Created with Kopitora."
