Seiko Matsushita
Located on the basement floor of the Hilton Tokyo in Nishi-Shinjuku, Fuji Gallery Shinjuku will host its second exhibition of contemporary artist Seiko Matsushita, titled Rebellion of Window Frame, from Saturday, December 21, 2024, to Friday, January 31, 2025. This follows the artist's earlier exhibition, Shackled to the Courtyard, held in February of this year. While Shackled to the Courtyard showcased unpublished drawings and video works from the artist's extensive career, Rebellion of Window Frame will present installations and several works created by layering two drawings on paraffin paper. These two exhibitions trace the artist’s trajectory, often categorized as a feminist artist, from past to future.

Living in a society filled with entrenched stereotypes and a sense of stagnation, women endure struggles and inner conflicts. Since the 1990s, Seiko Matsushita has portrayed these societal and personal narratives through various media, including installations, paintings, sculptures, photography, performances, and animations. Her early installations, created with heavy, rigid materials like iron and concrete, sharply questioned societal oppression and institutional issues. In contrast, her recent works employ lighter, more delicate materials such as bird feathers, wax, felt, and paraffin paper, shifting focus to internal and psychological realms. This transition in materials reflects her movement from addressing external structural themes to delving into individual internal sensations and existential depths, continuously rethinking the relationship between society and her art.

The "window frame," a key symbol in this exhibition, not only frames a view but also serves as a boundary between the "inside" and "outside" while simultaneously connecting the two. When this "window frame" is removed, we are exposed to the raw world of inside and outside, losing the vague sense of security we once had. The familiar scenery may appear entirely different. In this exhibition, the artist removes the existing frame, layering two delicate drawings on paraffin paper, each with a different theme, to create a unified landscape (artwork). However, the second layer is only faintly visible because the drawings are overlaid. This approach evokes the current multi-layered reality, where the complexity of layers makes individual elements harder to discern.
