FUMA Contemporary Tokyo|BUNKYO ART will host Shigeo Ishii "Perfect Crime: Black Painting" from 7/22.

Shigeo Ishii (1933-1962), until his premature death at the age of 28 from a chronic illness he had suffered from since childhood, was a painter who created many masterpieces from a sharp perspective, overlapping his own deep anguish with the political stagnation, social imbalance and violence of postwar Japan.

Inspired by the ideas and expressions exchanged at the "Seisakusya-Kondankai (Creators' Roundtable Conference)," an art research group that intersected film, theater, literature, painting, and other fields, in 1955, he turned his attention from the expressionistic style of his earlier paintings, which focused on the human figure in massive quantities, to a series of social satirical works with the theme of human alienation such as "Violence Series", "Anxious City Series," "State of Martial Law" and others.

In addition to the oil paintings from the "Violence Series," this exhibition also includes pen drawings by Tatsuo Ikeda, a member of the"Seisakusya-Kondankai," and the "Printed Paintings Series" by On Kawara, in order to decipher the atmosphere and ideological background of the avant-garde in the 1950s.

Today, all of these works are in the collections of public museums, making this exhibition a rare opportunity to view a cross-section of avant-garde expression that emerged during the same period. We hope you will take the opportunity to visit the exhibition.
