Shigeo Toya Sculpture Exhibition

Nagano Prefectural Art Museum
Finished

Artists

Shigeo Toya
Shigeo Toya, one of Japan's leading contemporary sculptors, was born in 1947 in Ogawa Village, Kaminomizuuchi County, Nagano Prefecture, and began his full-scale activities as a sculptor in the mid-1970s. He has been confronting sculpture, which was dismantled as an institution in postwar art in Japan and abroad, and has attempted to reconstruct it from its essence.

This exhibition, Toya's first solo exhibition in Nagano Prefecture, will explore his views on sculpture in its entirety by tracing his gaze on the nature of the social structure that underlies his unique concepts of "surface" and "structure" in sculpture.
