Shigeru Nishikawa "Under Construction or Destruction: Layer and Gap 2023"

Mitsukoshi Contemporary Gallery

Artists

Shigeru Nishikawa
Shigeru Nishikawa paints buildings "under construction" or "under demolition" that suddenly appear in towns and cities with his unique brush strokes and use of color.

The "Layer" series of paintings evoke the passage of time and geological strata on a striped background created with multiple colors.

The Gap series consists of multiple canvases in different colors, horizontally shifted and joined together, and painted using these canvases as supports.

Both of these series express the overlapping of time, the transformation of landscapes, human activities, and the eternal flow of things that will continue in the future, which can be seen through the repetition of the process of building demolition and construction, and are still undergoing trial and error.
