Hirosaki Museum of Contemporary Art will hold the first solo exhibition of Shinji Ohmaki in the Tohoku region as part of its spring/summer 2023 program. Ohmaki has created numerous fantastic installations and public artwork that dynamically transform the entire space and invite the viewer into a different world. Ohmaki has also exhibited works that reflect the local climate and memories of various regions in Asia, Europe, and other parts of the world. In advance of the exhibition, Ohmaki interviewed people throughout Aomori Prefecture to learn about their customs, nature, and beliefs, and through listening to their voices, he arrived at the theme of life and death, which is a circle of life and death for people, nature, the material world, and the spiritual world.
In this exhibition, Ohmaki will present a series of new installations, including the "Liminal Air Space-Time" series, which is one of his most recent works. In this series, a single thin piece of cloth moves organically in large, rippling waves, awakening the physical senses that lie dormant within people. By experiencing the fluctuation of the boundaries of time and space, which we cannot usually feel, and the invisible gravity, a space-time is created in which we quietly confront fundamental questions such as the existence of the world itself, life and death, and collapse and creation. The memories of the land and people of Hirosaki have been accumulated and transformed into the exhibition space of the museum, where Ohmaki's stories of rebirth and creation will be overlapped and a new landscape will unfold.
