Wada Garou is pleased to present Searching for a Yellow Pebble, a solo exhibition by Shinpei Okawa, opening on February 27.

The exhibition begins with the memory of a small pebble the artist once encountered by chance in his daily life. From this fleeting experience, it turns quietly toward the acts of seeing and remembering, and toward the uncertainty of the moment an image comes into being.
A sharply pointed yellow pebble glimpsed on a morning sidewalk, casting a vivid shadow in the eastern light. On a rainy morning, the same pebble—overturned, its color and shape altered—before one day disappearing entirely.

What the pebble ultimately was remains unclear. Yet the images that arise before the canvas resemble this “yellow pebble,” emerging through chance encounters, repetition, and subtle shifts of memory. By layering fragments of landscape with personal and art-historical memory, Okawa creates pictorial spaces where time and perspective fold into one another.

Featuring primarily new works, the exhibition reflects on the delicate space between finding and losing. As viewers engage with the paintings, the time spent before them gradually opens into an act of searching in itself.
